Titan Missile Museum

This morning we visited the Titan Missile Museum, also known as Air Force Facility Missile Site 8 or as Titan II ICBM Site 571-7, a former ICBM missile site.  This site was (1) of (52) built in a 3 year period in the early 60's.
The guided tour was educational and entertaining and was conducted by one of 50 retired volunteers.  Below is a view of the command center 3 stories below ground.  The silo became operational in 1963 and was deactivated in 1982
The eight story below ground level silo containing the missile and its related equipment includes connecting structures of cableways (access tunnels), blast locks, and an access portal and equipment elevator. The complex was built of steel reinforced concrete with walls as much as 8-foot-thick (2.4 m) in some areas, and a number of 3-ton blast doors sealed the various areas from the surface and each other.
The concrete structure viewed below is of the silo doors which are permanently blocked from opening more than half way in accordance with a US/USSR agreement.
The next photo shows the topside view looking down into the missile silo.
